In Celebration of Father’s Day!

Jun16

Father’s Day is a celebration honoring the fatherhood, paternal bonds, and the influence of fathers in our society.  A good father or father figure makes all the difference in a child’s life.  A father is a pillar of strength, of support and discipline.  He will share his life with his child, sharing his passions and life experiences.

Freeflight would like to take the time to appreciate the service of all our fathers and the men who act as father figures.

Many of our male pilots share their passion with young people.  Whether it’s sharing a plane ride, telling a flight story or showing some child around a plane, they are sharing their time, influencing a young life, making a difference.  Here is to all the male pilots who are fathers or acting as father figures.

To our flight instructors, our honorable teachers, who spend time providing guidance, developing, influencing young adult lives during their flight training.  You must be patience, have a sense of understanding of each individual, and the ability to give that extra little bit, while teaching a student to fly.

At Freeflight, we watch as fathers share their passions, strengths, support, and bring a unity to their families.  Stories are created, memories for sharing, and a new family legend for their next generation.

Sina and his son recently went flying together.  His son, an Ohio college student, presently studying bio-engineering, enjoyed an afternoon over the skies of NJ.

Julius loves to fly, and is seen regularly, taking his family, wife Sharon and son Julian, on flying adventures.  Julius is an avid photographer who has a volume of memories in his collection.  Julius and his family have accompanied Freeflight on several fly-outs during the years.  Julian’s first flight in the pilot seat was with flight instructor Brian Robbins, his father quietly sat in the back seat of the Diamond DA40, while his son’s was at the controls.

Brian Kilpatrick started teaching his son, Brian Junior to fly.  His son now continues his flight lessons in our C152 with Steve Wemple.  A twinkle in Brian Jr. eyes after his flight appears.  His father must be proud as he learns his son continues forward with his flight lessons.

Gavin Singh, a professional pilot, and flight instructor Rob Burns, watches, as Gavin’s son Tyler departs in the DA20.  Gavin has shared the skies with Tyler as he has grown, taking him on Lear flights, observing Tyler piloting the skies on Microsoft Flight Simulator.  To Tyler, flying almost comes naturally.  Tyler soloed in 14 hours, only because he changed flight instructors.  Tyler’s first instructor departed due to personal reasons.  Tyler’s goal is to obtain his license on his 17th birthday.  They also share their love of dogs, each with dogs on leases standing under the tall tree enjoying an afternoon at the airport.

John Lupnacca, owner of N8383T and a builder of a RV9, dreamed of the day his son would become a pilot.  Several years ago, Jonathan earned his pilot license.  We now watch as father with son venture off into the skies together.  John and Jonathan recently shared a flight to Leesburg, VA to visit the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center near Washington Dulles International Airport.  John flying one leg and Jonathan the return leg home.

Bob Parker and Tony Baltuskonis took part in our “Fly It Forward Day” earlier this spring.  A day for women to experience flight.  Each father shared a flight with their daughter.  Bob give his daughter, Callyn; a flight in the Diamond DA40, Tony gave his daughter, Jessica, a flight in the Archer.  Gary Growney provided a flight to his own niece, also Jessica.  Gary, a voluteer fireman,  is often heard talking on the phone with his daugthers who live out of state.  Donald Peacock, one of our flight instructors is now sharing his passion of flight with his wife Wanda, by giving her flight lessons.  Donald had wanted to give his wife a flight that day, but was unable to do so due to increased winds.

Flight Instructors Bob McCabe and Dave Mull, two great men, have contributed much of their lives influencing young adults.  Both gentlemen have been long time participates in the Civil Air Patrol’s young cadet program.   Gary Growney and Paul Bolognone two other gentlemen, in recently years have become involved with the CAP’s young cadet program.  This program also allows these men to serve this great country of ours.  Please thank them for the time they give our country.

We met Dave, our mechanic several years ago at Trenton Robbinsville Airport.  We had recently brought our 1979 C172.  Dave to the time to change a wheel bearing, installs an oil filter, and teaches us about the aircraft maintenance needed on our C172.  Dave never requested anything in return.  A grandfather, Dave and his wife Bernie are second parents to their grandchildren, as their own children work hard to support their family.  Dave is often seen at Birthday parties, spending time with his mother, and at the Trenton Robbinsville Airport giving someone a helping hand.

And last, but not least, is Jan Greenberg, who many of you have recently met, as he spend some of his time at work in our office.  Jan a very passionate pilot, regularly shares his love of flight. Jan donates his time, energy, and money, participating in the local EAA young eagle program. Often on our My FBO online schedule system there is a note by Jan, “young eagle flight” at the Flying W Airport, South Jersey Regional Airport or Cross Keys Airport.  Jan a member of the EAA Chapter 1438, this EAA Chapter of volunteers pilots regularly provide flights for youths ages 8-18 in our local community.

Future Pilots Take Flight with Freeflight Aviation on Learn to Fly Day

On Saturday, May 21, Freeflight Aviation celebrated International Learn to Fly Day at the Flying W Airport.  With clear blue skies and calm winds, many future pilots and flight enthusiasts participated in this successful event.  Participants were able to get close to the aircraft on display from Freeflight Aviation, Aero Prep and Helicopter Flight Services.  Those that had questions about flight were able to talk directly to aircraft owners, pilots and flight instructors. A number of youths between the ages of 8 to 17, were given Young Eagle flights by Jan Greenberg.  Jan’s a long time member of the Freeflight Aviation Flight School, a member of the local EAA Chapter 1438, and a volunteer pilot for the Angel Flight Organization.  Jan is looking forward to flying atleast 500 Young Eagles for the EAA.

Several attendees took advantage of the one-hour introductory flights available in the Cessna, Piper and Diamond aircraft.   Two of our Flight Instructors, Rob Burns and Chris Colacci gave attendees introductory flights.  Marcus Staloff, another instructor discussed his love of  the taildragger.  Marcus is an owner of a red tail wheel citrbria, an aircraft covered in cloth.  Others attendees decided to visit the Flying W Airport’s Runway Café for a relaxing breakfast or lunch, and enjoyed the view of aircraft taxing by or departing the runway.   While enjoying their meal, they may have seen on the members of the Northeast Raider’s Demo Team taxing by their window in one of the colorful Yaks.

As an extra incentive for those considering flight lessons, a drawing was held for a Discovery Flight, a great first step in getting a pilot license. The winner Fred Demshick, a local resident of the area, will go on a one-hour flight with a certified FAA flight instructor to get familiar with the airplane, the airport and experience the general awe of taking the controls of an aircraft for the first time, thousands of feet above the earth.  This was a memorable day for Fred’s family and Freeflight.  Not only did Fred win the Discovery Flight, but his three children were provided a Young Eagle flight in a low winged Piper Archer by Jan.   Fred and his family made a video of their flight experiences this day and shared it with Freeflight members and their friends on Freeflight’s Facebook Fan page.  Freeflight Aviation looks forward to welcoming Fred into its’ family of club members.

Aviation is a small group of people interconnected to each other, expecially in this area of NJ.  The Flying W Airport manages another airport close by, the South Jersey Regional Airport.  It is the home of the Air Victory Museum  and the original Runway Cafe.  The South Jersey Regional Airport, also know as VAY, is about 5-10 minutes from the Flying W Airport.  Many pilots from both airports know each other, visit both restaurants, and often go out flying together.  Aviation is a small world.

TAKING FLIGHT

Fly It Forward Maria Wolford

Freeflight Aviation’s winner of the one-hour Introductory Flight during the “Fly It Forward Day” was Maria Wolford, of Fort Dix, New Jersey. For Wolford, the flight was a great first step toward getting her pilot license. Wolford, 45 and married to an Active Duty Air Force First Sergeant, moved to New Jersey from Warner Robins, GA a year and half ago when her husband was assigned to McGuire Air Force Base. She enjoys going hunting, fishing, clamming, crabbing, and relaxing on the boat the couple keeps in Aberdeen Proving Ground, MD. “Watching Air Shows and certain military planes train and do ‘touch and go’ have always had my attention.” says Wolford. “So living under the flight line right now in Browns Mills is actually pretty cool. And, just recently, I started watching Flying Wild Alaska and Alaska Wingmen.” Wolford’s first experience in a non-commercial aircraft was when a friend took the couple for a flight in his Mooney aircraft. “That was a ride that made me really think ‘I want to do this.’” Wolford explains. “For New Year’s, another friend took us to Martha’s Vineyard in his Cessna 172 and since then my wanting to learn to fly has been even stronger. Then the next thing I know my husband signed me up for Women’s Week in Aviation and I got to go up with Rob. I don’t think I quit smiling the rest of the day after that flight!” Wolford credits the support of family and friends for taking her that much closer to realizing her dreams of becoming a pilot. She thanks her husband and Freeflight for “giving me the extra push to go forward with this next adventure.”

The weekend was breezy and the bright red Citrabia was unable to give flights during  the Fly It Forward weekend. Pilots, being resourceful people put their heads together and decided to fly the heavier aircraft for our event.  The beautiful fearless young girls and women would have the chance to take flight after all. The Diamond DA40, two piper archers, and one piper warrior flew the non-pilot females this weekend.  Local Brownies and the Camden County Youth Group had a chance to participate.  Emily spoke to the Brownies and Mark gave the Camden County Youth Group a tour of his red Citrabia.  If the young ladies decided not to fly, they tour various aircraft and watched as others took their steps into the plane and climbed upward into the sky.  Kirk and Rob gave flights on Saturday.  Darren and Kirk gave flight on Sunday.  Tony and Robert gave flights to their daughters.  Chris flew his friend Diane.

Just Flying

On the first day of spring, March 20, three aircraft ventured up the Hudson River Corridor to enjoy a day at the Cronins Maple Farm.  After landing at Dutchess County Airport, and parking, everyone realized just down the ramp was AOPA winning aircraft from 2009.  Eleven people climbed into Blue Eye’s rental van in various ways, to slowly drive the twisty winding roads of upper state NJ, looking forward to enjoying a pancake breakfast dripping with fresh maple syrup and enjoy the warmth of maple coffee.  Flights were made up and down the Hudson River on this sunny warm first day of spring!

International Learn to Fly Day at the Flying W Airport.
…..more information to come soon.

Impressions of a Pilot
Flight is freedom in its purest form,
To dance with the clouds which follow a storm;
To roll and glide, to wheel and spin,
To feel the joy that swells within;
To leave the earth with its troubles and fly,
And know the warmth of a clear spring sky;
Then back to earth at the end of a day,
Released from the tensions which melted away.
Should my end come while I am in flight,
Whether brightest day or darkest night;
Spare me your pity and shrug off the pain,
Secure in the knowledge that I'd do it again;
For each of us is created to die,
And within me I know,
I was born to fly.
— Gary Claud Stokor

Fly It Forward Challenge

Times they are a changing.

Our home airport, the Flying W Airport , N14,  reopened their flight operation Café in February.  The Runway Café is now being operated by Vinci and Jim, and is open from 8 AM to 4 PM. Vinci and Jim also operate the Runway Café at the South Jersey Regional Airport, VAY, a neighboring airport.   Speaking of the South Jersey Regional Airport, it is under new management.  The airport is now managed by Andrew Hartman, the assistant manager from the Flying W Airport.  Andrew had participated in the Red bull Flugtag in September 2010, with his Rocky 5 craft.  At both Runway Cafés are buckets to collect  KEYS for “keys 2 cash 4 for autism”.  This is a project’s of Jim’s, with help and support from Jane and Tommy.  Stop by either airport, drop off your keys, and learn more about their project.

Saving Freeflight Aviation From the Snow!
Based at the Flying W Airport (N14) we have, since the Christmas Holidays, seen the Snow come and come and come.  I guess it hasn’t snowed for a week now, but the big white piles still tower above many high winged aircraft on the field.  As it so often happens, Murphy’s Law went into effect for our Airport’s snow removing equipment.  All snow removal equipment broke down except for one lone white pickup truck with a plow.  Yes, plowing was slowly being done one truck width at a time.  People came to the rescue, equipment got fixed, big large snow mountains were created, the sun finally returned, and a day of good flying began again.

Steve

Freeflight was rescues by their own flight school members.  Shovel and broom in hand, heavy wet snow was slowing being removed from and around our Rental Aircraft. Steve, our flight instructor miraculously appeared with his powerful red snow blower, saving us from the long afternoon of shoving, sore backs, and wet cold soggy feet.   Early the next day, upon our arrived to the Flying W Airport,  Shawn’s beautiful blue New Holland tractor, is seen moving snow, opening more tarmac space for the aircraft to taxi.  Shawn, then, spent his afternoon clearing additional pathways to some snow blocked hanger doors.  With sunny weather on the way, aircraft and pilots could now escape into that wild blue wonder.   We thank our members for their support and for making our life and the airport’s life a little easier.

Shawn

Spring Flying!

 Lawn Sign Fever, getting ready for spring!

FFA1

Who will be moving in?

Do you see feathers, bird droppings or twigs?  You might have a new neighorbood in the wing, tail, or engine of the Aircraft. Our feathered friend has decide to build an Airplane Condo for nesting.  An engine is a nice place to stay warm in the spring and start a family.  Ofcourse, our feathered friend never throught of taking her family of eggs for a flight in the aircraft or having her well built nest catch on fire.   Not only will her eggs get cooked, but you might have well done rings in your cylinder or your feet may become warmer then you ever wanted.  Toasted feet, I call that “no fun at all”.

Your best defense against birds nest is a GOOD Preflight Inspection.  Since birds are notorious for building nests in aircraft with depris, the best items to look for is, WOW, depris.   Birds get alittle excited while building their nests.  They may leave their dropping close to their Aircraft Condo’s Entrance.  They are tired after a hard day of working, flying back and forth with all those fancy Condo trimings.  Clean up after theirselves?  Heck No!.  Hense, with a little preflight detective work and determination, you should find their Condos.  Take a good look in the engine, the wings, and tail or any little opening the birds might try to sneek into for living.

Now us humans do try to plug up holes, with such things as cowl plugs, tail plugs, etc.   Remember to remove these plugs before flight, and replace them after flight.  Maybe the birds will decide to build their Airplane Condo in another aircraft the just sits on the field and never flys.   That way, we will both be happy and can co-exist as neighorbors.

Block Time Now Avialable in the DA-40!

Diamond DA40
Diamond DA 40 taking flight

Our regular price is $149.00 per hour.  Why not purchase a 20 hour block for $129.00 per hour, and complete your instrument training in a state of the art aircraft, the Diamond DA40.  It has a Garmin 430 and 530.  It’s a Great Plane for trip taking.  Get checked out today.   Just give us a call.   (If we raise our pricing due to fuel price increases, the block price will also increase)

Multi Engine Instructor

Tom in C172

Flight Instructor, Rob Burns recently recieved his Multi-Engine Flight Instructor Rating in the Flying W’s Seneca.  Need an MEI, Rob is now available for providing instruction in the Flying W’s Seneca and Arrow.

Sun N Fun

Is just around the corner.  From March 27-April 1, Pilots will be enjoying sunny Florida…also known as “Spring Break for Pilots”.  Several of our Freeflight Aviation Pilots will be attending Sun n Fun event this year.  If you can make it for the week or for a day, it should be a Must Go Event on your list.

International Learn to Fly Day is May 19, 2012

Freeflight and the Flying W Airport will be hosting a “Learn to Fly Day” event on May 19, 2012.  We will be posting more information here and on the Learn to Fly Day website soon.
